ArmInfo. Compared to neighboring countries in the region, the production segment of Armenian IT is quite developed. This was stated by Aram Kocharyan, co-founder and director of Layerswap, in an interview with an ArmInfo correspondent on the sidelines of Tech Week Vanadzor-2025.
According to him, official data on the volume of technological production in Armenia do not reflect the real state of affairs, since startups that create products, not softwear (software), are registered as companies providing services.
This is due to the fact, as Kocharyan noted, that companies with the participation of foreign investors are formally opened in the United States, while the development teams and main assets remain in Armenia.
Co-organizer of Tech Week Vanadzor-2025, DigiTec Executive Director Khachatur Hakobyan, answering a question from an ArmInfo correspondent, noted in turn that high-quality outsourcing companies have operated and are still successfully operating in Armenia for many years, which, thanks to local talent, knowledge and hard work, can provide services to the entire world. But from these companies, as he further explained, private entrepreneurs have long emerged who have created their products and services in the Software as a Service (SaaS) model and offer them globally.
Hakobyan emphasized that it is more difficult to create physical technology products in Armenia, not code ones. But such companies, in any case, exist, including in the ranks of the Union of Advanced Technology Enterprises (UATE). According to the expert, this is due to the inadequate level of awareness of the local IT community about the market, trends, the lack of engineering laboratories engaged in R&D (Research and Development - scientific research and development), logistical problems and difficulties with customs clearance.
At the same time, softwear is easier to export. "And, nevertheless, there are numerous startups in the country that are working on product development, despite objective difficulties," he noted. At the same time, the co-organizer of the event noted that today the IT sector should no longer be considered separately, given the level of its involvement in almost all areas of activity - from agriculture to healthcare. "If earlier IT was a vertical sphere, now it is horizontal. But it should be noted that such a transformation is observed not only in Armenia, but throughout the world," he emphasized.
TechWeek is being held in Armenia for the third year in a row. It was first organized in Stepanakert, last year in Gyumri, and this year - from July 4 to 6 - was held in Vanadzor. And in 2026, the event will be held in Goris. The TechWeek program was quite eventful. Over the course of three days, conferences, panel discussions on current topics, presentations with the participation of more than 60 industry experts, opinion leaders, representatives of IT business, fintech, investors, etc. were held. An educational EXPO opened at the event site, workshops, a Wings innovative ideas competition, and a DevHacks hackathon were held. In total, more than 2,800 people took part in TechWeek events.
The initiators of Tech Week Vanadzor were TCF, Zealous, and the Union of Advanced Technology Enterprises (UATE).
According to the Statistical Committee, for the first quarter of 2025. The information technology (IT) sector in Armenia grew by 24.5% year-on-year, reaching a volume of 142.2 billion drams. The calculated exchange rate of the dram in January-March 2025 was 395.42 drams/$1
